bookbag: Galoshes by Kit Allen

This was one of those wonderful library finds. SOO glad Kid3 and I happened to be sitting near the "A" section of the board books in our library, so she could discover this series for us.

Kit Allen wrote and illustrated the most sweet, simple, and subtle (!) books about the four seasons. This one, Galoshes, is about spring. There is also Sweater (fall), Longjohns (winter), and Swimsuit (summer).

The cover. Do you love it already?
Two of the books feature a girl, and two have a boy.
All very subtle though - they are not overly gendered books.

There is just one word per page.

One garment gets added on each page, and then it's timeItalicfor a seasonally appropriate adventure.

Cute and cute.

Could you refuse to love a book that shows a LITTLE GIRL collecting
worms in a rainstorm? and not just collecting, but "saving." I love
these books more each time I read them.

The illustration of the steam just gets me in how perfect it is.

We have gotten a surprising amount of mileage out of these books. These books can be simple and straightforward, where you just read the given word on the page and move on - or you can spend time talking about the seasons, remembering similar experiences in your kid's life, and discussing how the little character might feel as she is going through her day. Kid3 (age two) is who you think would love them the most, and you would be right. But Kid1 and Kid2 will read them with her, and seem to really enjoy them too.

Each book ends with "sleep" as the last page - which, besides being "awww" inducing, makes them a good choice for just-before-bed wind-down time.

They are (another) out-of-print gem, but look for them in your library or used on Amazon.
